Queen Creek School Calendars and Enrollment: QCUSD, Higley and J.O. Combs, Year by Year

1.Why Queen Creek Has Three Different First Days of School

Queen Creek-area addresses fall into one of three public unified districts, and each publishes its own calendar with its own first day. There is no single "Queen Creek school start date," and the table below gives each district its own row for both published school years rather than averaging them into one. If you have children in two of the three, you have two back-to-school weeks.

Two of those 2027-28 calendars were approved a long way ahead: J.O. Combs approved both its 2026-27 and its 2027-28 calendar on the same date, November 13, 2024, and Queen Creek Unified posts its 2027-28 PDF alongside the current one. That is unusually far out, and it is useful if you are timing a move around a school year rather than a closing date. 2.QCUSD 2026-27 Calendar: Every Posted No-School Date

Queen Creek Unified’s 2026-27 calendar PDF is the primary document, and the table below is the whole of it — every no-school date the calendar prints, read off the PDF on September 22, 2026. Two of those dates get misreported constantly, because the calendar splits them across two month blocks: fall break runs across September and October, and winter break across December and January. Read one block on its own and you end up with half a break.

The fall-break line is the one worth reading twice. The QCUSD calendar prints “28-30 Fall Break - No School” in the September block and “1-9 Fall Break - No School” in the October block, then “12 Return to School.” Read together, that is one continuous break from September 28 through October 9, 2026, with students back on Monday, October 12 — not the three days the September block alone suggests. Higley Unified’s 2026-27 calendar, read literally, runs fall break October 5 to 16, 2026. J.O. Combs takes September 28 to October 2, 2026, returning October 5. So QCUSD overlaps J.O. Combs through that first week and Higley through the second, while Higley and J.O. Combs share no fall-break day at all. Three districts, three fall breaks, none of them interchangeable.

Spring is the opposite story. All three districts take the same spring break in 2027 — March 8 to 19, students back on March 22 — so a household split across two districts finally gets one shared week. QCUSD then prints a separate single no-school day on Friday, March 26, 2027, labeled “March Break” rather than folded into Spring Break, while Higley and J.O. Combs each list a one-day “Spring Holiday” on that same date — so March 26, 2027 is a no-school day in all three districts, under two different names. It is exactly the stray Friday that gets lost when someone copies the two-week block into a planner and stops there.

3.What the Early-Release Pattern Actually Means for Pickup

All three districts mark the final day for students as an early release: QCUSD on May 20, 2027, Higley and J.O. Combs on May 26, 2027. The weekly pattern is where they part company. Higley’s 2026-27 calendar states outright that all Wednesdays are early release for elementary and middle school, and the J.O. Combs calendar footer says early release is every Wednesday, with dismissal times set campus by campus. Neither the QCUSD 2026-27 calendar PDF nor the district’s calendar page names a recurring weekly early-release day at all — QCUSD publishes early-release clock times by school level and never ties them to a weekday. There is no single “Queen Creek early-release Wednesday” to plan around, so check the district you are actually in.

J.O. Combs prints its Wednesday dismissal times on the calendar itself, campus by campus, using each school’s initials. The district’s schools are Combs Traditional Academy, Ellsworth Elementary, Kathryn Sue Simonton Elementary, Jack Harmon Elementary, Ranch Elementary, J.O. Combs Middle School, Combs High School and Combs Center for Success; the calendar footer lists the times below, with two figures for most campuses split between parent/teacher-conference days and end-of-semester dismissals.

The practical consequence is that each early-release day opens a two-hour childcare gap at every level, and that on a normal day dismissal is spread over 90 minutes across the district — high schools at 2:15 p.m., elementary campuses at 2:55 p.m., junior highs at 3:45 p.m. Which campus your child attends decides which row applies to you, and that is a boundary question rather than a calendar one. Day-to-day grades, attendance and school messages run through the Synergy ParentVUE and StudentVUE portals in QCUSD, at qc.apscc.org. Set those logins up during enrollment rather than in week three.

4.How to Enroll a New Student in QCUSD, and What to Bring

New and first-time QCUSD families enroll through the district’s online enrollment portal. Returning and existing families do not use that path — it is specifically the new-student route, and starting there when you are already enrolled is a common wasted afternoon. Documents can be uploaded during the online process, or you can download the enrollment packet and return it in person to the child’s school. Either way, the forms have to be in before the school year starts.

The documents QCUSD asks for

• Original birth certificate — not a photocopy.
• Proof of immunizations.
• Proof of residency, such as a utility bill.
• Records from the previous school, if the student is transferring in.
• Parent photo ID.
• A course-selection form — junior high and high school students only.

Higley Unified asks for a shorter kindergarten-registration set: the child’s birth certificate, an immunization record, and proof of residency per Arizona Department of Education guidelines.

5.Kindergarten Age Cutoff: The Rule Is State Law, Not District Policy

A.R.S. § 15-821 sets it for every public school in Arizona: "A child is eligible for admission to kindergarten if the child is five years of age. A child is deemed five years of age if the child reaches the age of five before September 1 of the current school year." QCUSD’s kindergarten page and Higley’s kindergarten-registration page both publish the same “five by August 31” line, which is the statute restated rather than a policy either district chose. J.O. Combs did not state an age cutoff on the page we read — its Kinder Round Up page announced the event without repeating the rule — so for J.O. Combs the statute itself is the citation, not a district page. The statute also lets a governing board admit a child who is not yet five by September 1 when it is in the child’s best interest, provided the child turns five by January 1 of that school year, so “five before September 1” is the default rather than an absolute bar.

One QCUSD detail is worth knowing before you pick a campus: half-day kindergarten is offered district-wide except at Katherine Mecham Barney Elementary, which runs full-day kindergarten only. If a half day is what your household needs, that single exception matters more than any letter grade on the building.

J.O. Combs runs a "Kinder Round Up" event at each of its elementary schools each year. When we read the page on September 22, 2026, it announced the event without publishing 2026-27 dates or restating the age rule. Treat the statewide cutoff as the governing rule there and call the district for the event date rather than assuming it mirrors a neighboring calendar.

6.Open Enrollment: Three Districts, Three Very Different Processes

Arizona lets a family apply to a public school outside its home attendance area when space allows. What differs is how each district handles the application, when it answers, and whether a bus follows the student.

The QCUSD transportation line is the one that changes household budgets. The district states plainly that it does not provide transportation for students open-enrolled outside their home attendance boundary. A seat at a preferred campus can therefore cost you two round trips a day for the length of the child’s time there — worth pricing against the drive from whichever of the Queen Creek neighborhoods you are considering.

J.O. Combs publishes a priority order rather than a race: resident pupils, returning students and siblings come first, then children of district employees and qualifying foster youth. Its page also records a live capacity snapshot — as of July 1, 2026, general enrollment was open at all seven schools listed, while special-education program slots were closed at every campus on that same date. That kind of dated snapshot ages fast; read the current one before you plan around it.

7.Charter Application Windows: One Lottery, Two Rolling Doors

Charter schools are the part of the calendar people miss, because one of the operators works to a fixed application window that closes months before the school year it feeds, while the others never close at all. Arizona law (A.R.S. § 15-184) requires a charter to hold a lottery when applications exceed capacity, and allows a sibling preference. Whether you ever see that lottery depends entirely on which operator you are applying to.

The decision rule is short. American Leadership Academy is the only one of the three that has published a dated window, and the one it published ran November 15, 2025 to January 31, 2026 for the 2026-27 school year. That window closed on January 31, 2026, and as of September 22, 2026 no 2027-28 window had been posted, so there is no published date to work back from for the next cycle — watch ALA’s own enrollment page rather than assuming it repeats these dates. 8.Finding Out Which District and Campus an Address Falls In

We do not tell you which school an address is assigned to, and neither should a listing, a builder’s brochure or a neighborhood page. Attendance boundaries move, and the only answer that holds up is the district’s own lookup on the day you ask. What we can tell you is which tool is authoritative for each district — and that one of the three does not have a real lookup at all.

• Queen Creek Unified — an address-level lookup at schoolsitelocator.com/apps/queencreek, linked from the district’s own open-enrollment page. This is the tool the district tells open-enrollment applicants to use first, to identify their home school before applying elsewhere.
• Higley Unified — a boundaries and feeder-pathway page at husd.org, covering both attendance areas and which schools feed into which.
• J.O. Combs Unified — a district and school boundaries page that lists attendance-area schools with their addresses. It is a static list, not an address lookup, and it notes that the high school and middle school boundaries encompass the full district, so those attendance areas are not sub-divided by neighborhood. That line describes the district’s boundary-area campuses; J.O. Combs also runs Combs Center for Success as a second high school, so “the high school” on that page is not a count of the district’s high schools.

The three are not equivalent, and it matters which one you are holding. QCUSD’s is a genuine address-level lookup: you enter the address and it returns the home school. Higley’s is a boundaries and feeder-pathway page — a map of attendance areas and of which schools feed into which — not a tool that assigns an address to a campus, so read it rather than query it, and confirm the result with the district. 9.A Month-by-Month Planning Calendar for a Family Moving Mid-Year

Everything above collapses into a sequence. This is the order the published windows actually fall in, using the 2026-27 cycle as the worked example — and because this page is dated September 22, 2026, most of that cycle has already run. The last column says which rows are history and which are still ahead.

For the 2027-28 cycle, only the district calendars exist so far: first days of July 22, 2027 at Queen Creek Unified and Higley and July 26, 2027 at J.O. Combs, with the breaks set out further down this page. Neither an ALA application window nor Higley’s kindergarten readiness-assessment dates for 2027-28 had been posted when we checked on September 22, 2026, so treat the rows above as the shape of the year to come rather than dates to put in a diary.

1. Confirm which district the address is in, using the district boundary tools rather than the mailing city.
2. If a charter with a fixed window is on your list, put its window in the calendar first — it is the earliest deadline by months.
3. Gather the birth certificate, immunization record and a utility bill in your name at the new address before you start the online form.
4. If you are open-enrolling in QCUSD, price the daily driving: no district transportation follows the student outside the home boundary.
5. Check each district’s calendar PDF before booking travel. Spring break 2027 happens to fall in the same two weeks in all three districts, but fall break and the last day of school do not.

10.What Is Already On the Books for 2027-28

Districts do not always post two years ahead. Here, all three have. Queen Creek Unified publishes a full 2027-28 calendar alongside the current one, J.O. Combs approved both years’ calendars on November 13, 2024 and posts the 2027-28 break schedule in full, and Higley has adopted and posted its 2027-28 dates as well.

Notice what changes in 2027-28. QCUSD and Higley converge on the same students’ first day, July 22, 2027, after starting three days apart the year before, and their winter and spring breaks line up exactly. Spring break is the reliable one either way: March 8 to 19 in 2027 and March 6 to 17 in 2028, the same two weeks in all three districts both years. Fall break is the one that never lines up — QCUSD September 27 to October 8, 2027, Higley October 4 to 15, J.O. Combs only October 4 to 8. QCUSD’s runs roughly two weeks in both years, so a household budgeting childcare should be looking at October, not at a short autumn gap.
