Higley Unified School District No. 60: Which Queen Creek Addresses It Serves, Its Campuses and Its Calendar

1.Which Queen Creek Addresses Higley Unified Serves

Higley Unified says so itself: its homepage describes the district as serving students "in Gilbert and Queen Creek, Arizona" (husd.org, scraped September 22, 2026). That single line is the cleanest primary-source confirmation that part of the Town of Queen Creek falls outside Queen Creek Unified. The physical proof is two campuses with Queen Creek 85142 street addresses — Cortina Elementary on South 188th Street and Sossaman Middle School on East Jacaranda Boulevard.

What HUSD does not publish is an address-by-address list, and nobody else should be writing one either. The district runs a boundaries and feeder-pathway page, and that page is the answer to "which school does this house go to." The neighborhood layer is where this gets practical. Our research on the Cortina community records the district for that area as Higley Unified, read from HUSD’s own boundaries page in September 2026 — but a neighborhood-level note is still not an address-level assignment, and we do not publish one.

2.The Campuses: Addresses, Grade Spans and 2024-25 Letter Grades

Cortina Elementary’s grade span is a live disagreement between two state records, and we print it as one rather than picking a side. The Arizona State Board of Education’s 2024-25 A-F file and the school’s own site both say kindergarten through grade 6; the Arizona Department of Education’s school record lists the campus as preschool through grade 8. Both records include grade 6, so what is actually in dispute is preschool at one end and grades 7-8 at the other. If either end matters for your child, call the school before you commit.

The high schools are the other thing buyers misread. Both of HUSD’s comprehensive high schools — Higley High and Williams Field High — carry Gilbert street addresses, so an HUSD family inside Queen Creek is looking at a high school outside town limits. On the feeder question, HUSD’s boundaries page charted Cortina Elementary to Sossaman Middle School to Higley High School as of September 2026 — and in the same breath: that is a district pathway chart, not an address assignment, and Williams Field High is the district’s other high school. Nothing on this page says a neighborhood or an address feeds a particular school, because the district’s own boundaries page is the only place that answer exists.

3.How Higley Graded in 2024-25, and What the District Does Not Publish

Higley Unified holds an A as a district for 2024-25 in the Arizona State Board of Education’s FY2025 accountability file, and all four campuses above hold an A for the same year. The year label matters as much as the letter — a 2024-25 A is a snapshot of a school year that ended before this page was written, so check the year on any grade you are handed.

The more useful information-gain here is the list of things nobody can hand you, because the sources disagree or the district simply does not post them. Every one of these has been checked:

• A total HUSD school count. Three sources give three different numbers — 14, 15 and 16, the last of those from HUSD’s own homepage. None of them is a settled count, so we publish none as the count.
• Per-campus enrollment. Only the district-wide "approximately 12,600" figure is published. There is no verified student count for Cortina, Sossaman Middle, Higley High or Williams Field High.
• Which high school a specific address feeds. The published feeder chart maps campus to campus, not address to campus; the address-level answer lives only in the district’s boundaries page.
• Bus-eligibility distance. HUSD publishes transportation contacts and fleet statistics, but no walk-zone or eligibility distance that we could verify.
• Sossaman Middle School’s exact grade span. Confirm it with the school rather than assuming the usual 7-8.

4.The 2026-27 Calendar: a July 23 Start and a Two-Week Fall Break

HUSD students start July 23, 2026 and finish May 26, 2027 on an early-release day, across 180 instructional days split 91 in the first semester and 89 in the second. Teachers report earlier: new teachers July 14, returning teachers July 20, with the last teacher day May 27, 2027.

The fall break is the date that surprises people who moved from a Queen Creek Unified household. HUSD closes October 5-16, 2026 and brings students back October 20. Queen Creek Unified’s own 2026-27 calendar PDF runs its fall break September 28 through October 9, 2026, with students back October 12 — two long breaks that overlap for only one week and end seven days apart. In a two-district family, that is two separate childcare problems in the same autumn.

One pattern no comparison table catches: HUSD’s own 2026-27 calendar PDF states outright that all Wednesdays are early release for elementary and middle school. That is a weekly childcare fact, not an occasional one. J.O. Combs says the same in its calendar footer ("Early Release - Every Wednesday"); Queen Creek Unified’s 2026-27 calendar PDF and calendar page state no fixed weekly early-release day at all, so do not assume the three districts line up on this (each district’s own calendar, September 2026).

5.Open Enrollment and Kindergarten Registration

HUSD accepts open-enrollment applications year round — that is the district’s own wording — from students outside their assigned boundary and from outside the district entirely. Decisions turn on building and classroom capacity, staff availability, specialized-program capacity and other resources, so an application is a request, never a reservation.

That timing is worth comparing before you choose a district. Queen Creek Unified has families use its site locator first and then apply, with forms due before the school year starts. J.O. Combs sits closer to HUSD: its own page says schools "shall accept pupils throughout the school year as capacity allows," with no fixed deadline (each district’s own open-enrollment page, September 2026).

1. Get a paper form at any district school, download it, or apply through the district’s online registration system.
2. Submit it whenever you are ready; the district states applications are accepted year round.
3. For the following school year, expect a decision notice by May 1.
4. Confirm your acceptance within 5 working days of that notice — the district states the deadline but does not publish what happens if you miss it.

Kindergarten: the age cutoff and what to bring

A child must be 5 years old by August 31 of the enrollment year. That is not an HUSD invention — Arizona statute A.R.S. § 15-821 sets the statewide rule, which is why every district in the area uses the same date. Children turning 5 between September 1 and December 31 have three documented options at HUSD: kindergarten prep, an early-entrance kindergarten readiness assessment, or waiting a year. The readiness-assessment registration window runs January 3 to May 24.

Registration documents are short and standard: the child’s birth certificate, an immunization record, and proof of residency per Arizona Department of Education guidelines. Which campus you register at is a separate question with a separate answer — the district’s boundaries page, not the paperwork.

6.Busing: Who to Call, and the Fleet Behind It

Start with the answer, because it is a gap rather than a number: HUSD does not publish a bus-eligibility distance we could verify — no walk-zone radius, no mileage threshold. Whether a specific address qualifies for a stop is a phone call to HUSD Transportation, (480) 279-7130, or an email to transportation@husd.org. The department is at 2140 S Higley Rd, Gilbert, AZ 85295.

The scale behind that call is worth knowing before you assume a route exists: the department runs 85 school buses and 62 support vehicles, average fleet age 14.5 years, staffed by 41 drivers and 19 bus aides. In the prior school year that fleet covered over 593,327 miles and ran 1,020 extracurricular trips.

• Ask about your specific stop and its location, not the district average — a district that runs from Gilbert into Queen Creek covers a lot of ground with 41 drivers.
• If you are open-enrolling rather than attending your boundary school, ask about transportation in the same call. HUSD does not publish how it treats open-enrolled riders; Queen Creek Unified states outright that it does not transport students open-enrolled outside their home boundary.
• Ask for the answer in writing, dated, if a bus stop is part of why you are buying the house.

7.Bonds, Overrides and What HUSD Costs on a Tax Bill

On November 4, 2025 HUSD put two measures on the same ballot and got opposite answers. The 15% maintenance and operations override failed, 45.61% yes to 54.39% no; it would have raised an estimated $13,871,165 funded by an estimated tax rate of $1.28 per $100 of net assessed valuation. On the same ballot, authorization to sell, lease or exchange an 18.8-acre district-owned parcel at the southeast corner of Ray Road and Wren Drive passed, 66.58% to 33.42%. County summaries sometimes render both as a single line; they are two different questions with two different outcomes.

Read down that table and the pattern is the story: HUSD bond or override requests failed in 2021, in 2022, in 2024 and again in November 2025. That record is the context behind any conversation about class sizes, program budgets or the next ballot question, and it is the part of a district’s history that listings never mention.

The published rates, and which side is higher on which

On the Maricopa County 2025 rate table, levied on FY2026 bills, the HUSD district-only line (district code 07060) is a primary rate of 3.3588 and a secondary rate of 1.5895 per $100 of net assessed valuation. That is what the "Higley #60" line on a tax bill represents, and it is the same figure on the Queen Creek side and the Gilbert side alike.

Read the table in both directions. The combined primary rate is higher on the Queen Creek portion (7.1264 against 5.5779), and so is the approximate residential primary rate (5.5658 against 4.0173). The combined secondary rate runs the other way, higher on the Gilbert portion (3.2703 against 2.2903). The county publishes no total-bill figure for either side, so neither column can be read as "this side costs more" overall. Use the district-only rate to answer "what does HUSD levy" and the combined rates to see which layers apply where — our property tax breakdown shows how the layers stack, and the county assessor is where a specific parcel gets settled.

8.A Five-Step Check Before You Buy in an HUSD Part of Town

1. Run the exact street address — not the subdivision name — through HUSD’s boundaries and feeder-pathway page, and take a dated screenshot.
2. Call the assigned campus and confirm its current grade span — especially for a preschooler or a child entering grade 7 or 8, which is exactly where the Cortina and Sossaman span questions bite.
3. Call HUSD Transportation at (480) 279-7130 and ask whether that address qualifies for a bus stop, and where the stop is.
4. If you want a school other than the assigned one, file the open-enrollment application early and note the May 1 decision / 5-working-day confirmation rhythm for the following year.
5. Pull the parcel on the county assessor site and read the school line on an actual tax bill rather than working from a rate table, so you see the HUSD levy and the town layer together.
